Any Project Runway fans out there? I have to admit, I haven’t kept up lately, but I’ve really enjoyed watching the show when in the past.
Sometimes just for fun I like to give myself a set budget, a super tight timeline, and a challenge of a certain look. I’m always finding a way to turn everything into game…a little skill my mom taught me 😉
For Christmas this year my mom brought back some really fun border print fabric back from Costa Rica. I have been hanging out to it and waiting for inspiration to strike. Kind of last minute we realized that we had childcare already in place and no plans on the night of Valentines, so that morning I gave myself a little “Project Runway” challenge…use my Costa Rican fabric, incorporate the border in a fun way, and get it all finished in time for our date! I have to admit, I absolutely thrive under pressure. I think its the procrastinator in me coming out. Give me a month, week, or day and no doubt I will still finish it on the same day.
For my husbands 30’s birthday we went on a trip to New Orleans and I found a fun jumpsuit that fit SO perfectly!
Then I brought it home, washed it and it SHRUNK! I’m talking lost at least 2 inches in length shrunk 🙁 I’ve still worn it, but I no longer felt like it was a perfect fit for me. I got to thinking that this new fabric would make a great jump suit, so with the style of the original in mind, I drafted up a new one.
I wish I would have taken more photos, but as I said previously…I was working on a very tight timeline, and remembering to take photos fell by the wayside.
I decided after cutting the legs that I wanted pockets, so had to get a bit creative adding them in.
Also, I did not quite have enough fabric for the back so I had to piece it together in a way that hopefully isn’t noticeable.
I do love the wide leg look, and it is super comfortable while still looking dressy.
I made the front cross over and have just pinned it so far so that it doesn’t gape open, but will probably add a small discreet snap or hook before I wear it again. A safety pin can be such a pain when you are trying to get it off in a hurry. Funny story when I wore it on my date I completely forgot I had pinned it and was freaking out that I was basically going to have to rip it off of me haha. Thankfully I remembered before any fabric was sacrificed!
Lastly I did make it a little bit too long, and also noticed that my right leg is most definitely about 1- 1 1/2 inches longer than my left. Hey, another perk to making your own clothes I suppose! So I have since taken them up a bit. I took the extra length out above to border print so that I would not loose any of that fun portion of the fabric.
